At Art Related Technologies, we know that there is nothing more important that a good logo. Your logo is your first impression on a client. It establishes a level of professionalism and trust between you and your client.
A great example of establishing a brand identity through a logo is the new National Hockey League team. The Vegas Golden Knights are the newest team to join the league and are expected to start next season. They recently had a press conference to show off their new logo and it has received some mixed reviews.
Overall, the concept is a nice and safe one. Knights are typically depicted as protectors of the weak, and the simple design seems to meet the so-called “Pencil Case Test,”
As for the overall logo, it’s pretty safe. The Pencil Case Test, so called by The Guardian’s Sean McIndoe for a logo that could be simply drawn by a fan on a pencil case, is a general read of whether or not a logo is memorable. Generally speaking, the new logo passes the test. The V inside of the helmet slightly resembles Magneto’s in “X-Men,” but the logo itself is memorable and simple enough to draw. That makes it distinctive and recognizable, and is a good step to establishing a relationship and a brand with the consumer.
The team’s color scheme was originally chosen to have four colors – black, gold, red and steel gray – each of which represent the team’s values, according to a release from the NHL. The steel gray is supposed to represent strength, while red stands for the Vegas skyline and the ideal of being ready to serve. Black is the color of power and gold stands for Nevada, the highest gold producing state in the Union.
While this creates a great narrative and symbolism, that’s a lot of color to put into a simple sports team logo. That’s why the logo for the team covers only gold and black. While this helps makes the logo more stark and balanced, this color selection clashes with established teams within the league – notably both the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins. This makes their color pattern a bit of a questionable decision, and particularly for hockey fans in those two cities.
